Udall: New Mexico Tech receives money for energy research

Senator Tom Udall announced yesterday that the Petroleum Recovery Research Center at New Mexico Tech will receive almost $700,000 to continue developing a method to treat produced water? water that comes up from the ground during oil and gas drilling. This water has a high concentration of salt and contaminants that is unsafe to drink and expensive to dispose of safely.

?

?Oil and gas production is a major part of New Mexico?s economy and we are always looking for ways to reduce the environmental impacts, especially with respect to our limited water resources,? said Udall. ?I am glad New Mexico Tech is working to solve this environmental challenge by using our abundant solar energy resources.?

?

New Mexico Tech is one of nine research programs that focuses on extending the life of mature oil and natural gas fields, while trying to reduce the environmental footprint and risks. The funding came from federal royalties from offshore oil production, as set forth in the 2005 Energy Policy Act.
