95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (85) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (80) | Rotten (4)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

You watch "Searching for Sugar Man" at first fascinated by the mystery - what happened to Rodriguez? Where did he go? Then you become infuriated by its revelations of financial injustice.

An unexpectedly fresh nonfiction tale that rustles up deep feelings of a life stolen -- part docu-mystery, part uplifting valentine about the universality and resonating power of music.

Generates immediate interest in a forgotten artist, permitting the delicate yet barbed tunes to guide the experience, returning a sense of excitement to a man who unfortunately missed out on the highlights of his career.

It isn't that Searching for Sugar Man's plot developments are gotcha!-like, but this documentary does boast some bowl-you-over reveals best experienced blind.

Ultimately, for Rodriguez, musical redemption transcends the greed and soul-sapping breaks he encountered.

Rodriguez's life story is only part of what makes "Searching for Sugar Man" such a revelation.

The man and his music are worth checking out, even if the movie is not.

Ultimately an ode to Rodriguez's artistic modesty and the power of his music-a rousing crowd-pleaser that asks you to save questions for another film.

A rousing and all-encompassing look at a man who becomes even more of a mystery after we've gotten to know him.

Film Review: 'Hello I Must Be Going' - Darien, CT Patch

There are few greater cinematic pleasures than watching a pair of actors at the top of their game. In 'Hello I Must Be Going,' Melanie Lynskey and Christopher Abbott give the sort of subtle, all-encompassing performances that serve as reminders that the best actors do a lot more than appear on magazine covers.

'Hello' tells the story of Amy (Melanie Lynskey), a 35-year-old divorcee living with her parents in Westport, Connecticut. She finds her life rejuvenated after having an affair with Jeremy (Christopher Abbott), the 19-year-old son of her father's business associate.

Lynskey has had small roles in a number of films, including 'Up in the Air' and 'Win Win.' In 'Hello,' she is asked to carry the movie, and does so dutifully, telling the story of her character with the smallest gesture or change in expression. One could imagine Lynskey going through the whole movie without saying a single word and selling the role perfectly, but when she is given dialogue, she knocks that out of the park, too.

Christopher Abbott is best known as Charlie from the Lena Dunham HBO series 'Girls.' Aside from perhaps Adam Driver, Abbott was the best thing on that show, running the gamut from dutiful boyfriend to unhinged maniac to disaffected playboy and back again.

Here Abbott takes on the role of a 19-year-old former child actor who is deceiving his family and doesn't want to act anymore. This could be a thoroughly grating character, but Abbott lacks any sort of vanity in his performance, bringing out the truly pathetic aspects of Jeremy. It's astounding for an actor to convince the audience to identify with his "problems," which include the burden of playing Walt Whitman in an upcoming theater production.

Many of the reviews for 'Hello I Must Be Going' have praised the work of Lynskey while painting the overall film as formulaic. It's inarguable that a few beats in the screenplay, written by Sarah Koskoff (and directed by Koskoff's husband, Todd Louiso) feel pat, but such criticism overlooks the fact that the film is a bit of a writing miracle, moving through a number of rooms, houses and the streets of downtown Westport (which itself is a character in the film) at such a brisk, unexpected pace.

More than anything, it's great to see a film centered on a female's wants and needs, rather than caring about the many ways that she can be of service to men. A tip of the hat to Lynskey, Koskoff, Louiso and Abbott for producing that rare unicorn of a movie: One that treats women as though they're living, breathing, thinking human beings.

FBI agents staying away from Benghazi for now

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Two law enforcement officials say that for security reasons FBI agents are staying away from the Libyan city where a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

The officials say the bureau is not going to put agents in harm's way and that the city of Benghazi must be made secure before the FBI sends investigators there.

The officials demanded anonymity because of they are not authorized to speak on the record about an ongoing investigation.

An FBI team arrived in Libya last week to investigate the Sept. 11 deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Separately, the State Department is further reducing the U.S. Embassy staff in Tripoli for security reasons. The embassy warned Americans of possible demonstrations in the capital and Benghazi on Friday.

Maingear certainly loves to turn out solidly specificated hardware, and today is no exception. Its latest offering? The Nomad 17. As the name suggests this is a 17-inch notebook for gamers on the go. (Nomad, get it?) The new addition will support third-gen Intel Core i7 chips (up to 3.8GHz) and a maximum 32GB of RAM, with a choice of hard drive configurations. It's not all about the under-the-hood grunt, though, with Maingear offering a choice of six colors for what it's calling "hand-painted premium automotive paint jobs." As for the other spec options? Research could lead to a better understanding of flesh-eating disease

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Royal Society University Research Fellow Dr Edward Taylor, from the University of Lincoln's School of Life Sciences, is carrying out research on bacteriophage that play a role in flesh-eating disease.

Dr Taylor spent the last ten years at the University of York where he was awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2006. He has chosen to continue his research at the University of Lincoln, with funding continuing for a further two years.

Bacteriophage (often called phage) are viruses that infect bacteria. These are extremely common and mostly harmless; however some play a role in diseases such as diphtheria, cholera, dysentery, botulism, necrotizing (flesh-eating) pneumonia, toxic shock and scarlet fever.

Phages are nature's "genetic engineers," frequently swapping genes between bacterial strains. This happens by the phage attaching itself to the surface of the cell, making a hole and then injecting its own DNA into the bacteria. Occasionally this DNA becomes integrated into the bacterial chromosome where it lays dormant, but more commonly the phage is active straight away. The bacterial metabolism is hijacked, the DNA de-coded and new phages are produced in great numbers. Finally the bacterium is burst open and the new virus particles escape.

This inactive/active life style allows the phage to cleverly separate its outbreaks over long periods of time. Some phage which infect harmful bacteria carry toxin and other genes which when decoded interact with our immune systems, tying them together, giving the phage and bacteria a better chance of survival. Some phages also destroy bacteria.

Dr Taylor works on a particular phage which infects a flesh-eating bacterium called 'Streptococcus pyogens'. This carries a toxin and DNase genes, which when expressed go on to damage the immune system causing scarlet fever, "toxic shock" and more invasive necrotizing forms of infection.

Dr Taylor said: "This research will allow for a fundamental understanding of bacterial pathogenicity and the role of viruses in disease processes. The overall aim is to carry out an in-depth structural study on one phage that prompts Streptococci to become toxigenic. I am studying complexes of the viral proteins using a technique -- known as X-ray crystallography. This enables me to "see" the individual atoms within a protein. I am particularly interested in the mechanism of enzymes which break down DNA. These have been shown to help the Streptococcus pyogenes evade capture by the immune system and promote more invasive necrotizing forms of infection. I am studying these enzymes by making small changes to the protein structure and seeing what effect this has on the way the enzyme works. Through these changes I hope to gain a better understanding of the disease process."

It was through focused research with Professor Gideon Davis during his time at the University of York that led Dr Taylor to develop his own interests in the interplay between certain pathogenic bacteria and their compatible bacteriophage.

Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath seeks ... - Real Estate India

??|?? September 28, 2012 ?? 02:48pm ??|Contributed by manoja

New Delhi, Sep. 28 (ANI): Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath has expressed concern over fair pricing, while demanding involvement of village councils in deciding the value of land in the draft version of the Land Acquisition Bill.

Commenting soon after meeting of Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, Nath said: ?My concern is about the fair market value, the fair market value is defined as the circle rate or the rate at which transfers have been made.?

?Now, it is well known, that the circle rate does not reflect the market price, the transacted price or registered price does not reflect the market price and even if we have a multiple of three and you multiply it by four, in most cases it is still not be the fair market price. So I have suggested that the gram Panchayat (village council) must decide the price of land, there must be another stream of valuation which will decide the price of land,? he added.

He said that processes of compensation and acquiring land should be done in an expeditious manner and also brought under the aegis of the bill.

?I want process to be fast, so that both the farmer gets his compensation quickly and process of acquiring should be fast. One of our major concerns is that there are huge tracts of land. Land has been acquired and notice has been issued, neither has compensation been paid, five years have passed, compensation has not been taken- possession has not been paid now those must come under the ambit of the new laws,? he added.

The GoM meeting on the Land Acquisition Bill was not fruitful, as the panel was indecisive in arriving at a rational conclusion. Reportedly, soon after the meeting, Pawar had indicated that the amendments to the draft would be completed within a week?s time.

The central government had constituted a 14-member GoM last week after some ministers had voiced reservations against some of the Bill?s provisions.
The ?Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill, 2011? was tabled in the Parliament last year and was referred to a Parliamentary Standing Committee which submitted its recommendations in May 2012. (ANI)

Peter Molyneux criticises publishers for over-reliance on console cycle

The British game design legend Peter Molyneux blames the reliance of publishers on console cycle for the lack of intellectual properties (IP) in the market.

Both Sony and Microsoft are being strongly criticised for extending the life-cycle of their current-generation consoles as many analysts believe that the high-end consoles are long overdue.

There is hardly any doubt that the existing hardware is close to the tail-end of its life and it would not be long before they are replaced with a more powerful hardware.

The publishers realise this and are therefore reluctant to invest in new IPs, choosing to instead wait for the new systems to arrive in the market.

Molyneux is not happy to see the publishers adopting this cautious attitude and criticised them for being so dependent on the life-cycle of consoles.

?Two years ago, developers were going to publishers and saying we'd like to do this [new IP], and the publishers were saying, 'It's too late in the generation now.' The first time I heard that was about four years ago - it's ridiculous,? stated the 22-Cans co-founder.

He asserted that the lack of fresh experience on offer in the market is taking its toll on the gaming industry, making its future pretty uncertain.

According to him, the entire console gaming was in danger because of this attitude as the gamers are beginning to move on to alternative platforms to satisfy their desire for a fresh experience instead of settling for the horde of sequels that are being thrown at them.

Molyneux further went on to point out that the small technology iteration of platforms such as iPad gave it a huge advantage over consoles as the hardware improves every six months, becoming more powerful and making way for newer and better games.

He believes that if things continue to move on like this, then it would not be long before the alternative platforms become as powerful as the consoles, or maybe even better than their competitors.

?If we're not careful - and in fact this is highly probable - by the time that this generation finally comes out, which will probably be in about 14 months time, this little puppy might well be more powerful than the new consoles,? said Molyneux.

While both Sony and Microsoft seem more than happy to remain focused on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively, Nintendo is all set to move into the next-generation space with Wii U, which is scheduled to hit the North American region on November 18.

Indiana Tax Reporter: Glaze Tool and Engineering Seeks ...

From the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel:

A proposed $185,000 investment would create three jobs at a New Haven tool and die shop.

Glaze Tool and Engineering, 1610 Summit St., currently employs 23 people with average salaries of about $51,750. But the new manufacturing equipment would allow the 38-year-old company to add three more workers: two machinists earning about $35,000 annually and a tool and die employee paid about $65,000, according to a tax abatement application filed with the Allen County Department of Planning Services.

Abatements temporarily reduce the taxes paid on new buildings and equipment. If County Council approves the request next month, the company's taxes would be lowered $7,000 over five years.

Glaze produces products for the automotive, food, medical, heavy equipment and other industries, and also designs and builds special machines. It had about $2.5 million in sales last year.

The new equipment is expected to be installed by November, with the new employees in place by next June.

Iran's president leaves trail of guesses on future

(AP) ? Iran's president has no trouble making himself heard: rumbling through the U.N.'s annual world gathering this week with comments bashing homosexuality, describing Israel as a doomed misfit in the Middle East and predicting a rising tide against U.S. "bullying."

On one point, however, he is mum - his plans after elections next June that will close out his second and final term.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has so far dodged questions about possible post-presidential roles with cryptic replies or inscrutable silence. Yet this much is clear: Despite his bravado at the U.N. and other international forums, he heads into the last months of his presidency politically wounded at home from skirmishes with Iran's ruling system.

His departure as president also could lead to a more toned-down approach from Iran in general over its nuclear program and possible deal-making with the West, analysts say.

Iran's theocracy directs all key policies - including the pace of nuclear development and negotiations with the West - leaving the president, in theory, to shepherd domestic affairs and other issues. In reality, however, Ahmadinejad has reshaped the office into an international soapbox with messages that may or may not be sanctioned from the top.

Iran's ruling clerics have grown weary of Ahmadinejad's showboating style and his attempts at extending the powers of his office. This will likely mean the Islamic establishment will green-light only trusted and predictable insiders to run as his successor.

It also could free up Iran's outreach. A united front between the ruling system and the presidency could bring more confidence in pursuing new proposals, such as Ahmadinejad's mention of possible direct talks with Washington.

"It's too late for Ahmadinejad to be carrying such a policy message" because of his politically damaged aura, said prominent Tehran-based political analyst Davoud Hermidas Bavand. "The Americans may buy it if it comes from somebody else."

This leaves Ahmadinejad as mostly a placeholder until elections. The real interest is shifting to what he will do next.

"Don't expect Ahmadinejad to fade away," said Scott Lucas, an Iranian affairs expert at Britain's Birmingham University. "He will try to maintain some kind of political visibility. It's just unclear exactly what shape it will take."

Speculation on Ahmadinejad's future has veered in several directions. Some believe he will keep a nucleus of political allies as a brain trust with an eye toward possibly seeking a place on the ballot in 2017. Others see him shifting into a kind of populist champion, possibly leading a foundation focusing on his political base among the poor.

In one of his only hints about his plans, Ahmadinejad told a German newspaper in June that he could "return to scientific work" at a university while also keeping his fingers in politics. He holds a doctorate in civil engineering and traffic planning from Tehran's University of Science and Technology.

On Monday in New York, he also tossed out the prospect that he could return as part of Iran's delegation to the U.N. General Assembly.

And in early September, he set Iranian social media sites buzzing after an apparent joke in response to a reporter's question noting that term limits make this his last year in office.

"How do you know it will be the final year?" a grinning Ahmadinejad said. It set off rumors he would try to seek some way to stay in power, even though he clarified that the remark was a reference to the longevity of Iran's Islamic system.

Suzanne Maloney, who studies Iran at the Brookings Institution in Washington, said it's very unlikely that the 55-year-old Ahmadinejad would be content with a "comfortable perch at a think tank" like his predecessor, reformist President Mohammad Khatami.

"I would anticipate that he would want to be far more active," she said, "that his age and ambitions would predispose him toward some kind of entrepreneurial activity with a political bent and that ? in part because of his difficulties among the bulk of the current political establishment ? he will seek to play to an audience beyond Iran."

She added: "It will be entertaining."

Ahmadinejad's confrontations with Iran's establishment have already produced high-grade political theater.

The feud began last year with Ahmadinejad's drive to give the presidency more sway over key policies such as intelligence and foreign affairs. In a stunning rebuff to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a miffed Ahmadinejad boycotted Cabinet meetings for more than a week to protest Khamenei's choice for intelligence minister.

The payback was swift by loyalists to Khamenei, who felt stung after standing by Ahmadinejad during the chaos and riots following his disputed re-election in 2009.

Dozens of Ahmadinejad's political allies were arrested or driven into the political wilderness. Ahmadinejad's top aide, Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei ? presumably being groomed for his own presidency bid ? was declared part of a "deviant current" and effectively blackballed from higher office.

On Wednesday, judicial agents took Ahmadineajad's top press adviser, Ali Akbar Javanfekr, into custody to begin serving a six-month sentence for publishing material deemed insulting to Khamenei, the semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

In March, Ahmadinejad was dragged before parliament to face unprecedented questioning over his policies and snubs to Khamenei, whose most fervent supporters believe he is answerable only to God.

"Ahmadinejad knows that his political clout has been pretty much neutralized after his challenges to Khamenei," said Rasool Nafisi, an Iranian affairs analyst at Strayer University in Virginia. "He is now making his strategy for after he leaves office. He's something of a hero of the lower classes. He may try to capitalize on that."

His government has funneled handouts and development projects to Iran's struggling rural areas and provincial cities, where slowdowns in the sanctions-hit economy have pushed unemployment well above the estimated 25 percent national average and the ruling clerics are often viewed as aloof and out of touch. This could provide the base for another run for the presidency or parliament, said Nafisi.

"Ahmadinejad has a political future, but that future is electoral," he said. "There is very little chance that Khamenei will appoint him to some powerful organization or body. Too much has happened between them."

Meanwhile, the ruling system will soon begin weighing the options for Ahmadinejad's successor.

They hold all the cards, vetting all candidates for the presidency and parliament. The message these days is clear: Reformists, liberals and any others likely to challenge the ruling system are out.

Perceived front-runners at the moment include Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and ex-Revolutionary Guard commander Mohsen Rezaei. Former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani was given a prominent role at the Tehran-hosted Nonaligned Movement summit in August, raising his profile as a potential old guard standby.

All would likely strike a milder tone on the world stage than Ahmadinejad.

Of the five presidents since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, only two have moved on to prominent roles after leaving office: Khamenei and Rafsanjani, who also is a foe of Ahmadinejad dating back to the 2005 presidential election race.

"Ahmadinejad is now far away from the axis of power," said the analyst Bavand. "He is now a figure with lots to say but no real clout."

XXX search engine helps parents block porn

4 hrs.

There's a new (Web) address for all things X-rated. ICM, the company behind Search.xxx, Thursday launched its porn-only search engine that corrals porn sites inside a single .xxx domain.

While some members of the porn industry weren't too happy with Internet authority Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers' (ICANN) decision to authorize the xxx master domain, it may help parents prevent curious kids from seeing adult material.

ICM has made its launch page as convenient as possible for the user ? with no ads, a big search box and three buttons to select a language, a sexual orientation and a light or dark screen (the latter is preferred by experts for?nighttime reading ). The only protection is an age gate that asks users to indicate whether they're 18 years of age or older ? standard protocol on the Internet ? and insufficient to prevent minors from accessing it.

Many porn site operators are using the new .xxx extension. Parents can block this top-level domain from browsers used on family computers and other devices.

Metacerf, the security software company that has partnered with ICM to identify adult pages, offers a free plug-in for Firefox and Chrome?browsers ?that block .xxx websites, as well as other pages found to have adult content. (Porn sites were allowed to keep their .com addresses, so porn can still be found outside the .xxx domain.) A version for Internet Explorer and Safari will be released soon. And, Metacerf also has a family-friendly browser in the works, called Olly, for iPad and iPhone devices.

It's worth mentioning that you can also block .xxx and any other sites you find objectionable from?Google search results. Open a Google search page, click the gear icon at the upper right of the page to select options and then select "search settings." Scroll down the page and click the link "block unwanted sites." Type search.xxx in the box and click the Block button. Competing search engine Bing does not allow users to block specific sites, but like Google, it offers filters designed to eliminate showing links to adult material in search results.

To set the Bing and Google Search filters to "strict," go into your search settings by clicking on the gear icon. Choose "search settings" to see your filter options and set to "strict." That's it for Bing, but Google also lets you lock in your choice. While it's not really a lock that keeps kids from changing the stricter filter, it does add a big graphic element that indicates safe settings are on and sites are blocked. Big bouncing balls at the top of every search page are easy to see even from across the room.

Toddler Reunited With Family After Found Wandering The Streets Of ...

BELL (CBSLA.com) ? A toddler was reunited with his family after he was found wandering the streets of Bell early Tuesday morning.

Bell police received a call from a resident around 3 a.m. regarding a toddler that was wandering the 6700 block of Chanslor Avenue.

The boy, Daniel, was found wearing shorts and sandals and carrying his blanket.

Police canvassed the neighborhood, but were initially unable to find his parents and took the boy to the Bell Police Station.

Family members tell CBS2 they first noticed that Daniel was missing around 5 a.m. The boy, along with his mother and grandmother, was visiting from Mexico.

They say he unlocked two doors in the family?s home and wandered out of the house on Chanslor.

?A girl from the other house said the police came and took the baby,? Moises Rodriguez, the child?s uncle, said.

Daniel was reunited with his family just after 6 a.m.

Rodriguez says he plans to install a new child-proof lock immediately.

Know what people are searching for.

Keywords are essential to the success of your business online. Without targeted keyword selection, people won?t find you because the search engines won?t list you in the relevant position. Therefore, if you want your business to succeed, you must identify and use the most relevant keywords possible.

How are people searching for your business? If you are a solicitor, an accountant or a doctor, what is it that people are actually searching for? Family law, tax avoidance, or pain relief. You need to know what it is and the best way to do that is by using a tool such as Google Keyword tool to identify exactly what keywords people are using to find your business online.

You can learn more about?how to do Keyword Research?here!

A slight difference or play on words such as SEO Altrincham or Altrincham SEO can make a big difference. That is why you have to be careful with the keywords you select or you may invest time and money in position for keyword phrases that have little or no traffic and ultimately no results.

Claim your Google+ Local Business Page.

Actively Encourage User Reviews.

It is only natural that people talk about experiences that they have had whether they are good or bad. As a small business owner it is wise to encourage people to talk about your business and more importantly to share those thoughts via online reviews. A review signifies to the search engines that people are using your services and positive reviews mean that the search engines will have more confidence in your service and offerings, rewarding your hard work by sending you more traffic.

User reviews not only bolster the reputation of a local online business, they help improve rankings in local searches as well. It is by reviews that potential clients see how well the services or products the business offers met the expectations of previous clients and as such may sway their opinion in doing business with you or not.

What Does Local Search Engine Optimisation Mean to Local Businesses?

Local search engine optimisation gives the small business owners an opportunity to take on the larger national businesses in their own back yard. Yes a national business can afford to invest in the primary real estate on the high street but local businesses can win the hearts, minds and support of the local community in ways that the national organisations seldom manage. It is this local support along with savvy?local search engine optimisation?techniques that will allow small business owners to outrank and outperform their larger rivals.

5 Things to Consider Before Starting a Direct Mail Campaign

5 Things to Consider Before Starting a Direct Mail Campaign

Posted by david kovner on Tue, Sep 25, 2012 @ 12:38 PM

5 things to consider direct mailBusinesses have so many options to choose from when deciding how to spend their marketing budget that the whole concept of marketing can seem overwhelming (especially for small businesses). Should you utilize tv, radio, pay-per-click, print ads, inbound marketing, email, direct mail, etc. Each has their benefits and drawbacks and there is no right answer for everyone.

If direct mail is an option you are considering, ask yourself these five questions first. They will help you to determine if it will be an effective marketing channel for your organization.

1. Is my product or service a good fit? Items that have a small sale value and/or little chance for repeat business are probably not a good fit for direct mail. Large ticket items or smaller sales that generally result in recurring revenue are much better fits and will usually see a better ROI.

2. Can I mail to the right people? The best design combined with the most compelling offer will stall fall flat if it isn't sent to the right prospect. Start by building a profile(s) of your best customers and then use that profile to find other prospects. If you are marketing to consumers, look for patterns related to age, gender, income, education level, life stage, etc. If you are marketing to businesses, look for common denominators related to company revenue, title, number of employees, industry, location, etc.?

3. Do I have an offer? Building your brand and increasing your exposure in the marketplace certainly has its place in a marketing strategy. But direct mail is not the right channel for it. Direct mail is about eliciting a response. Your campaign needs to include an offer that will motivate the prospect to act. Without it, you will be hard-pressed to see any tangible results from your efforts.

4. Am I able to offer multiple ways to respond to my offer? Unless you are trying to drive traffic to a brick-and-mortar location, you are always better off giving multiple response options. Some prospects will want to pick up the phone, others will want to respond via email (specifically for B2B) and many will want to visit your website (you should also include QR codes and mobile-friendly landing pages for smartphone users).?

5. Can I track the results? Direct mail campaigns often have different measurements of success. Revenue, # of new customers, # of leads, # of trials activated, etc. are all viable ways of determining a campaigns success or failure. But it is important that you are able to analyze your data and make that connection. For example, was an increase in sales attributable to the direct mail campaign or another tactic? If you can't answer that question it is impossible to determine if direct mail is a channel you should continue to invest in.

If you can answer "yes" to the five questions above then direct mail is definitely a channel you should consider adding to your marketing mix!

Teaching Children to Share : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Teaching children how to share is something that you should start doing from the beginning. It is not as hard s you think you just have to?remember?to be?persistent?in it and use a few of these tips to help you along the way:

  • Offer a bite of your meal: Give your child a bite of your meal explaining to him or her that you?re sharing. Be sure to use a different spoon or offer a bite off of something you have not bitten off of because you want the share but not share germs.
  • Allow your child hide his or her favorites: Before friends come over, allow your child to pick a few of his or most favorite toys and hide them. These are the ones that they just don?t want to share and will cause a problem. This works well with small children but as they get older this should be stopped.
  • Take unshared toys away: If your baby won?t share a toy, take it away-no one will play with it.
  • Say thank you: When your child gives something to you, smile and say thank you, then give it back to him or her. Also be sure to thank him or her when they share something with someone else. Say something like ?Thank you for sharing.?

German business mood worsens despite ECB bond plan

BERLIN (Reuters) - German business sentiment dropped for a fifth straight month in September to its lowest since early 2010, raising fears of recession and underlining that a bold bond-buying plan laid out by the European Central Bank is no economic elixir.

Germany's relative resilience to the euro zone crisis has been steadily fraying as its firms see falling demand for their products from key European partners and signs of a slowdown in other markets.

Earlier this month ECB chief Mario Draghi announced a new and potentially unlimited bond-buying program to lower the borrowing costs of embattled euro zone countries such as Spain but market optimism has not spread to company boardrooms.

The Munich-based Ifo institute said its business climate index, based on a monthly survey of some 7,000 firms, fell to 101.4 in September from 102.3 in August, defying expectations for a slight rise.

A Reuters poll of 45 economists had forecast the index at 102.5.

"Today's Ifo index shows that German companies remain skeptical about the economic impact of Mario Draghi's magic," economist Carsten Brzeski of ING Bank said.

"Despite fears of a looming Eurozone break-up clearly fading away, German businesses are downscaling their expectations. The German economy could see a contraction in the third quarter."

In a report published after the Ifo numbers on Monday, the Bundesbank did not go that far, saying that the economy should continue its overall upward trend at the start of the third quarter. But it also underlined the "great uncertainty" over future prospects.

"The domestic economic situation is so far robust, but signs of weaker dynamics are noticeable," the German central bank said.

Dutch business confidence also fell in September to -6.7 points from -4.6 in August, adding to signs that the euro zone's stronger "core" economies are succumbing to the downturn.

While they have not been punished by debt markets like much of the euro's southern half, both Germany and the Netherlands have slashed public spending to secure the future of public finances.

"The drop in Ifo business confidence is a potent reminder that the outlook for the German and Eurozone economies still hangs in the balance," said Holger Schmieding, German economist at investment bank Berenberg.

"Further policy steps to contain the Euro crisis may be needed for the Eurozone to turn the corner."

TOUGH CUTS

Dragging on the Ifo index was a sharp decline in sentiment among manufacturers, although companies in retailing and wholesaling reported a slightly brighter mood. Last week's ZEW survey also showed German analyst and investor morale picked up in September.

Tough austerity measures in many European states have weakened their appetite for German products and a weaker global economic environment is hammering demand from emerging markets.

Industrial group Bosch and steelmaker ThyssenKrupp, have announced plans to introduce "Kurzarbeit" or government-subsidized short-time work at German plants.

"The outlook has worsened and is the worse since May 2009," Ifo economist Klaus Wohlrabe told Reuters.

The index would have fallen further had it not been for a ruling by Germany's constitutional court on Sept 12 in favor of the ratification of Europe's permanent bailout fund. Half of the responses in the survey came before the ruling.

While the German economy steamed ahead in the first three months of the year, saving the euro zone from recession by growing 0.5 percent, it lost momentum in the second quarter, with growth slowing to 0.3 percent.

The Finance Ministry warned in its monthly report last Friday that data pointed to weaker growth in the remainder of the year. Many economists are now predicting a contraction for the third and possibly the fourth quarters.

Last week composite Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) showed Germany's private sector shrank for a fifth month, and a separate index for the euro zone showed that the ECB's aggressive new bond-buying plan has so far failed to inspire any major improvement in business at ailing euro zone companies.

However, economist Gerd Hassel said he believed news of the ECB's bond-buying plan had yet to fully sink in.

"I'm optimistic that the Ifo climate index will rise again in the coming months," he said.

Understanding Online Business Success | Website Traffic Articles

?

By Mike Christie

Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don?t have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.

We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.

Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.

Like nature, ?growing? a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is ?startup? which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the ?planting? of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the ?harvest? where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.

The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.

From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.

Back to the business ? Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn?t if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.
