(AP) ? It's NASA's most ambitious and expensive Mars mission yet ? and it begins with the red planet arrival late Sunday of the smartest interplanetary rover ever built. Also the most athletic.

Like an Olympic gymnast, it needs to "stick the landing."

It won't be easy. The complicated touchdown NASA designed for the Curiosity rover is so risky it's been described as "seven minutes of terror" ? the time it takes to go from 13,000 mph to a complete stop.

Scientists and engineers will be waiting anxiously 154 million miles away as the spacecraft plunges through Mars' thin atmosphere, and in a new twist, attempts to slowly lower the rover to the bottom of a crater with cables.

By the time Earthlings receive first word of its fate, it will have planted six wheels on the ground ? or tumbled itself into a metal graveyard.

If it succeeds, a video camera aboard the rover will have captured the most dramatic minutes for the first filming of a landing on another planet.

"It would be a major technological step forward if it works. It's a big gamble," said American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy.

The future direction of Mars exploration is hanging on the outcome of this $2.5 billion science project to determine whether the environment was once suitable for microbes to live. Previous missions have found ice and signs that water once flowed. Curiosity will drill into rocks and soil in search of carbon and other elements.

Named for the Roman god of war, Mars is unforgiving with a hostile history of swallowing man-made spacecraft. It's tough to fly there and even tougher to touch down. More than half of humanity's attempts to land on Mars have ended in disaster. Only the U.S. has tasted success, but there's no guarantee this time.

"You've done everything that you can think of to ensure mission success, but Mars can still throw you a curve," said former NASA Mars czar Scott Hubbard who now teaches at Stanford University.

The Mini Cooper-sized spacecraft traveled 8? months to reach Mars. In a sort of celestial acrobatics, Curiosity will twist, turn and perform other maneuvers throughout the seven-minute thrill ride to the surface.

Why is NASA attempting such a daredevil move? It had little choice. Earlier spacecraft dropped to the Martian surface like a rock, swaddled in airbags, and bounced to a stop. Such was the case with the much smaller and lighter rovers Spirit and Opportunity in 2004.

At nearly 2,000 pounds, Curiosity is too heavy, so engineers had to come up with a new way to land. Friction from the thin atmosphere isn't enough to slow down the spacecraft without some help.

During its fiery plunge, Curiosity will brake by executing a series of S-curves ? similar to how the space shuttle re-entered Earth's atmosphere. At 900 mph, it will unfurl its huge parachute. It then will shed the heat shield that took the brunt of the atmospheric friction and switch on its ground-sensing radar.

A mile from the surface, Curiosity will jettison the parachute and fire up its rocket-powered backpack to slow it down until it hovers. Cables will unspool from the backpack and slowly lower the rover ? at less than 2 mph. The cables keep the rocket engines from getting too close and kicking up dust.

Once the rover senses touchdown, the cords will be cut.

Even if the intricate choreography goes according to script, a freak dust storm, sudden gust of wind or other problem can mar the landing.

"The degree of difficulty is above a 10," said Adam Steltzner, an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the mission.

It takes 14 minutes for radio signals on Mars to travel to Earth. The lag means Curiosity will already be alive or dead by the time mission control finds out.

The rover's landing target is Gale Crater near the Martian equator. It's an ancient depression about the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined with a 3-mile-high mountain rising from the center of the crater floor.

Scientists know Gale was once waterlogged. Images from space reveal mineral signatures of clays and sulfate salts, which form in the presence of water, in older layers near the bottom of the mountain.

During its two-year exploration, the plutonium-powered Curiosity will climb the lower mountain flanks to probe the deposits. As sophisticated as the rover is, it cannot search for life. Instead, it carries a toolbox including a power drill, rock-zapping laser and mobile chemistry lab to sniff for organic compounds, considered the chemical building blocks of life. It also has cameras to take panoramic photos.

Humans have been mesmerized by the fourth rock from the sun since the 19th century when American astronomer Percival Lowell, peering through a telescope, theorized that intelligent beings carved what looked like irrigation canals. Scientists now think that if life existed on Mars ? a big if ? it would be in the form of microbes.

Curiosity will explore whether the crater ever had the right environment for microorganisms to take hold.

Even before landing, it got busy taking radiation readings in space during its 352-million-mile cruise ? information that should help its handlers back home determine the radiation risk to astronauts who eventually travel to the red planet.

Curiosity's journey has been fraught with bumps. Since NASA had never built such a complicated machine before, work took longer than expected and costs soared. Curiosity was supposed to launch in 2009 and land in 2010, but the mission ? already $1 billion over budget ? was pushed back two years.

The delay created a cascade. Burdened with budget woes, NASA reneged on a partnership with the European Space Agency to land a drill-toting spacecraft in 2018. The space agency is in the midst of revamping its Mars exploration program that will hinge heavily on whether Curiosity succeeds.

The extra time allowed engineers to test and re-test the rover and all its parts, taking a spacecraft stunt double to the Mojave Desert as if it were Mars. For the past several months, engineers held dress rehearsals at the sprawling JPL campus 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles in anticipation of landing day when they will carry on a decades-old tradition of passing out "good luck" peanuts.

Practice is over. It's show time. To Mars or bust.

NASA rover closing in on Mars to hunt for life clues

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover was on its final approach to the red planet on Sunday, heading toward a mountain that may hold clues about whether life has ever existed on Mars, officials said.

The rover, also known as Curiosity, has been careening toward Mars since its launch in November. The nuclear-powered rover the size of a compact car is expected to end its 352-million-mile (567-million-km) journey on August 6 at 1:31 a.m. EDT.

The landing zone is a 12-mile-by-4-mile (20-km-by-7-km) area inside an ancient impact basin known as Gale Crater, located near the planet's equator. The crater, one of the lowest places on Mars, has a 3-mile-high (5-km-high) mountain of what appears to be layers of sediment.

Scientists suspect the crater may have once been the floor of a lake.

If so, they believe that sediments likely filled the crater, but were carried away over time, leaving only the central mound.

Readying to travel the last stretch to its landing site, Curiosity fired its steering thrusters for six seconds early Sunday, tweaking its flight path by 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) per second.

"I will not be surprised if this was our last trajectory correction maneuver," chief navigator Tomas Martin-Mur, with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement.

Curiosity is expected to hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 1:24 a.m. EDT on August 6. If all goes as planned, seven minutes later the rover will be standing on its six wheels on the dry, dusty surface of Mars.

Landing is by no means guaranteed. To transport the one-ton rover and position it near the mound, engineers devised a complicated system that includes a 52-foot (16-metre) diameter supersonic parachute, a rocket-powered aerial platform and a so-called "sky crane" designed to lower the rover on a tether to the ground.

NASA last week successfully repositioned its Mars-orbiting Odyssey spacecraft so that it would be able to monitor Curiosity's descent and landing and radio the information back to ground controllers in as close to real time as possible.

Earth and Mars are so far apart that radio signals, which travel at the speed of light, take 13.8 minutes for a one-way journey.

Google's Death Valley drive with the click of a mouse

Imagine being the only driver on a two-lane asphalt highway as the stark desolation of Death Valley National park passes on each side and the crystal blue sky stretches up from the horizon.

Or picture a tight left turn on Yosemite's Glacier Point Road where in the east iconic Half Dome suddenly appears against a backdrop of the snow-capped High Sierra.

The Google Street View service that has brought us Earth as we might not be able to afford to see it ? as well criticism that some scenes along its 5 million miles of the globe's roadways invade privacy ? this month has turned its 360-degree cameras on road trips through five national parks in California."Everyone likes to take a road trip through a national park," said Evan Rapoport, the Street View project manager, who was inspired by a cross-country camping trip he took after graduation. "Bringing unique places to people that they might not go in the real world is unique to Street View."

The company sought permission from the Department of the Interior before filming in May as drivers hit the road in vehicles rigged with 15-lens cameras that point in all directions, Rapoport said. The camera fires off still images at intervals depending upon the speed of the vehicle, then custom software blurs faces and stitches all of them together into an ever-advancing 360-degree panorama.

Click right and see orange-hued boulders formed from cooling magma. Click up and squint into that fireball of a sun hovering over the southeast California desert in Joshua Tree National Park, which is featured with the others along with the forest-dense Sequoia & Kings Canyon and Redwood National Park at Crescent City near the Oregon border.

Stop in the middle of the virtual road and do a 360 without worrying about being rear-ended by a ubiquitous RV.

The project was part of a Street View "refresh" of California that involved a trip down Highway 1 along the Big Sur coast, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge that spans the mouth of a coast-hugging canyon.

Is it part of a master plan to capture people in a virtual world?

"I sure hope not," Raporport said. "Part of our goal is to inspire people to see these places in person."

As national park attendance continues to decline, officials welcome this unique virtual visit as a way to keep fans connected and inspire others to experience the sights in person.

"I often wish we could get the word out on some of the park system's lesser known wonders," said Candace Tinkler, chief interpreter at Redwoods, with its massive trees that can live 2,000 years and soar up to 350 feet. "This is a wonderful opportunity for people around the world to connect to these places."

The parks join other Street View features like a snowy glide down one of the ski runs at Squaw Valley of 1960 Olympics fame, or a walk around the gardens of the Louvre museum in Paris. Rapoport would not say whether other U.S. national parks are being considered for this special look."

Joe Zarki at Joshua Tree says the virtual drive could be used to show tourists at the 1,200-square-mile park's peripherally located visitors' centers that the flat expanse of desert changes to a landscape of boulders and the namesake towering yuccas within an hour's drive.

With summer temperatures hovering near 120 degrees and heat stroke warnings common, this time of year only the hearty visit Death Valley, which at 282 below sea level boasts the lowest locale in the U.S.

"We're often the forgotten big park," said spokeswoman Cheryl Chipman of the 3,000-square-mile park that is the largest in the lower 48. "I think it will make people want to come to the park. It's a cool place, but it is remote. When they see those photos and the crystal clear blue skies they're going to want to come here ? especially in the middle of the winter."

Turning Your Lawn Into The Envy Of The Neighborhood ? Special ...

If you live in a part of the country that is at risk for wildfires, choose landscaping projects accordingly. For example, trees should be planted at least 100 feet apart. Additionally, large trees should not be planted less than 100 feet from your house or other building structure (garden, shed, workshop, etc.).

A great way to spruce up your landscaping, is to add some attractive outdoor lighting. Small solar lamps up the driveway, or in planting areas can provide a lovely accent to your yard, or special plants and trees. They can be purchased inexpensively at your local home improvement store, and installed quite easily.

When you are going to be digging in your lawn, be it for plants or to make a garden, be careful that you know what you are digging into. For instance, you could accidentally dig into a power line or some pipes. This could have serious consequences and cost you tons of money.

Add new mulch to your garden regularly. Mulch helps to keep your plant?s moist, and it can repel insects as well. In addition, it is pretty to look at a freshly mulched garden. You will also slow down the growth of weeds by keeping your garden mulched on a regular basis

In your landscape design, incorporate hard borders at the edges of the lawn where possible. Grass can be difficult to maintain along walls and fences, and will often look unsightly. By incorporating ad hard border, narrow is fine, you will minimize this effect and also give your lawn equipment and solid, ground-level surface to roll on.

One tip that all do it yourself landscapers should always remember is to have fun. Landscaping doesn?t have to be a chore, and it really shouldn?t be. Don?t make your design so complex that it will cause you to loath working on your yard. This can keep you from ever finishing your project.

When planning a landscaping project for your house, consider breaking your entire project down into much smaller jobs. This is important if you are not able to afford the entire project at one time. Doing so will let you tackle your project bit by bit, and not have your yard look like a mess in the meantime.

Utilize different forms and textures in your landscaping plan. This is a great way to diversify your landscaping by using distinctive branching patterns and foliage. From trees to bushes, or perennials to annuals, using a variety of different forms and textures in the plants you choose will add interest and uniqueness to your landscaping design.

Use a row of hedges to help dampen loud noises. If you live on a busy street or near an interstate, you know how annoying the constant sound of traffic can be. Use landscaping to help alleviate this irritant. Plant some bushes between your home and the offending road to help mute the sounds of the passing traffic.

Having a well-groomed front yard will make the curb appeal of your house gain some serious points in the neighborhood. A well-groomed back yard will give you the outdoor space that you desire for family functions, entertaining or just relaxing on your own. This article has shown you ways to accomplish all of this.

Queen did Olympic sketch 'in one take'

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II pulled off her acting role in the Olympics opening ceremony "in one take", a BBC official said Saturday.

The 86-year-old monarch was shown in a pre-filmed sequence in which actor Daniel Craig, playing fictional British super-spy James Bond, arrived at Buckingham Palace in a taxi to escort the queen by helicopter to the ceremony.

The Queen, accompanied by her corgi dogs, greeted Craig with the words: "Good evening Mr Bond."

Real helicopters then appeared over the Olympic Stadium during Friday's spectacular and parachutists playing Bond and the sovereign jumped out, just before Queen Elizabeth entered the stadium, wearing the same outfit.

It was one of the highlights of the show.

Nicholas Brown, the British Broadcasting Corporation's director of drama production, said the sovereign gave a flawless performance.

"She got it in one take," The Daily Telegraph newspaper quoted him as saying.

"That's what she does, and she does it very well. She is a professional."

"It was extraordinary to have the two (Queen Elizabeth and Craig) together with the corgis.

"The palace was terrific about the shoot and we were delighted and honoured that the queen was involved."

"It's a game changer for us," said campaign manager Zach Silk in Seattle. "It puts us in unique position to win."

But, his group is still the underdog, he said. In 32 previous elections nationally, same-sex advocates have lost. Silk said he believes the Washington election may be the turning point, thanks in part to the Bezos' donation.

"We're at a tipping point, and they really understand this is an historic moment, and they want to be on the right side of history and want to make history," he said.

Amazon publicly supported the law earlier this year, along with other prominent Pacific Northwest businesses, including Microsoft, Starbucks Corp. and Nike Inc.

Last month, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer and co-founder Bill Gates each donated $100,000 to support the law.

Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said the Bezos' donation was a personal decision and that "Jeff and MacKenzie feel strongly about the issue."

Silk and officials with two national gay rights groups ? Freedom to Marry and the Human Rights Campaign ? say Bezos' $2.5 million donation is the largest publicly reported gift to a marriage campaign. They noted that gay marriage opponents have tried to limit the disclosure of campaign contributions, so they couldn't be certain whether there was a larger one.

Referendum 74 was certified for the November ballot in May after gay marriage opponents in the group Preserve Marriage Washington turned in more than 240,000 signatures. The referendum seeks to overturn the gay-marriage law signed in February by Gov. Chris Gregoire.

The same-sex marriage law was supposed to take effect June 7 but has been put on hold pending the November vote.

A "yes" vote on the referendum upholds the law, and a "no" vote overturns it.

Joseph Backholm, chairman of Preserve Marriage Washington, said that while he was surprised by the size of the donation, his campaign has always expected that it would be outspent by gay marriage supporters.

"We're optimistic about what's going to happen in the end," he said. "Jeff Bezos gets to vote just one time like everyone else in state. That's the great equalizer."

As of Friday, Preserve Marriage has raised just over $253,000, though Backholm said the group hopes to ultimately raise $4 million.

National groups like the Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for Marriage, which was involved in ballot measures that overturned same-sex marriage in California and Maine, have promised to help overturn the law.

Same-sex marriage is legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Maryland legalized gay marriage this year as well, but that state also is poised to have a public vote this fall.

In Maine, voters will decide on an initiative to approve same-sex marriage three years after a referendum overturned a law passed by the Maine Legislature. And in Minnesota, voters will decide whether to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

The first television ad supporting gay marriage in Washington state was set to start during the Olympics opening ceremony Friday. The statewide ad was paid for by Seattle-based Pride Foundation, and will run several times a day on broadcast television in three media markets over the entire two-week Olympic games.

Kris Hermanns, executive director of the Pride Foundation, would not disclose the cost of the ad buy, but said it "will be in the six figures."

Tories teach Labour a lesson in education | Your Thurrock

IT WAS an ?A plus? to the Conservative group on Wednesday when they delivered a number of first class (with honours) lessons to the ruling Labour group on education.

Portfolio holder, cllr Oliver Gerrish had proposed a motion which objected to change to the present GCSE system.

But over the next twenty minutes, the Tories managed to make a number of salient points that left may have left the Cambridge graduate being graded: ?Could do better.?

The Tory argument was very much based on congratulating Thurrock schools on their improvements but then raising the concern that, as shadow portfolio holder, cllr James Halden said: ?There is clearly a contradiction in that, exam results are going up but our position in international tables seem to be going down.?

Cllr Gerrish was concerned at returning to system where students from an early age were pigeon-holed.

He said: ?We have a real system of flexibility now and I would be worried at returning to a system where you have no room to imprive from the age of 14.?

The crux of the Tories argument was made by Fobbing councillor Mark Coxshall. He said: ?We want an education system that encourages social mobility.

?We want to see people from all schools on the front benches and not just Eton etc.?

The Conservatives continued their assault by making reference to the academy system.

Cllr Halden said: ?We do not want to see a race to the bottom. Or a system where it is teaching to the exam. I was educated in Thurrock and am very proud of that.

?As shadow spokesperson for education, I will strive for the best educational system possible for our students.?

Cllr Gerrish, now under sustained attack was defended by cllr Barbara Rice who made reference to the many achievements of his administration, however, the Tories asserted that he was answering a question that was not on the exam paper!

Cllr Lynn Worrall attacked the Tories. She said: ?My son got to university (Brunel) because of the system we now have. he would have found it much harder under the old GCE/CSE system.?

It was the waspish but perceptive humour of Orsett councillor Mike Revell that finally secured the honours.

Cllr Revell said: ?If cllr Gerrish was organising an event in the Olympics such as the hop, skip and jump. He would have the hop on one day, the skip, the next and after another days rest, the jump.?

But as a learned man such as cllr Revell knows, democracy is often viewed as the second best form of government.

The motion, supporting cllr Gerrish was passed.

Chaffetz bill would help immigrant entrepreneurs | The Salt Lake ...

Washington ? Rep. Jason Chaffetz has signed on to a new immigration bill that would help small business owners secure permanent resident status, part of his drive to reform the nation?s system of visas and green cards.

Chaffetz, R-Utah, is the lead Republican sponsor on a bill introduced Thursday by Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers, which has no bearing on undocumented immigrants and doesn?t boost the number of available green cards.

What their bill would do is allow entrepreneurs born overseas to sponsor themselves for employment-based green cards as long as they are highly educated and can prove that their business has employed at least five people for the past four years. Under current law, these green cards, providing permanent resident status, are only available to people sponsored by a company.

"They have to demonstrate they have a job, but what if they actually own the business?" Chaffetz said. "We think this will affect thousands of people every year."

Conyers, who brought the issue to Chaffetz, said: "Currently, our immigration system provides green cards to those who fill jobs in the American economy, but not to those who create jobs. This makes no sense."

Their proposal has the support of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Small Business Association.

Chaffetz opposes calls for a comprehensive immigration reform bill, which he said has turned into "a buzzword for amnesty," but since his first campaign in 2008, has called for reforming the legal immigration system, which is plagued with long backlogs and strict quotas.

"If you can fix legal immigration, you can provide a legitimate pathway for people who are playing by the rules," he said.

"That should be our goal first and foremost."

Last November, the House overwhelmingly passed another bipartisan immigration bill led by Chaffetz that sought to make it easier for companies to recruit international talent from nations that regularly ran out of visas.

story continues below

That bill removes the per-country caps on skilled laborer visas, though it didn?t increase the number available. Essentially, it would allow the federal government to transfer unused visas from one country?s total to another nation that has used its allotment.

The Senate has yet to act on that legislation.

WildAlchemist: Does drinking coffee reduce the risk of skin cancer?

A recent study published in the journal Cancer Research claims that coffee drinkers may be at a reduced risk of developing basal cell carcinoma, one of the most common types of skin cancer. According to the research, individuals that drink at least three cups of coffee a day have a 20 percent decreased risk of developing this mild form of skin cancer which, while not necessarily deadly, can cause significant disfigurement of skin.

Jiali Han, author of the study and associate professor of dermatology and epidemiology at both Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, and the Harvard School of Public Health, evaluated data on 113,000 men and women, all of who drank three or more cups of coffee a day. She discovered that rates of basal cell carcinoma were 20 percent less among this group compared to those who drank no coffee at all, and that the active substance in question appears to be caffeine.

"Caffeine may help the body kill off damaged skin cells," claimed Dr. Josh Zeichner, an assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, in response to the study's findings. "If you get rid of these cells that are damaged, then they don't have the opportunity to grow and form cancers."

The findings seem to correlate with a 2011 study out of Rutgers University that identified a link between caffeine and skin cancer prevention. According to that research, caffeine appears to be an effective topical treatment for protecting skin against damage caused by excessive exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. (http://www.tgdaily.com)

"Although it is known that coffee drinking is associated with a decreased risk of non-melanoma skin cancer, there now needs to be studies to determine whether topical caffeine inhibits sunlight-induced skin cancer," said Allan Conney, Director of the Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research about the Rutgers study.

Drinking coffee can exhaust your adrenal glands, lead to substance addiction

As promising as the new research on coffee drinking may initially appear for preventing skin cancer, it is important to remember that coffee consumption can be dangerous and damaging to health. There are many other ways to prevent skin cancer, including regular exposure to natural sunlight without burning and vitamin D supplementation, that do not cause other health problems.

Coffee consumption stimulates the production of adrenaline in the body, which can overspend the adrenal glands, leading to chronic fatigue, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), allergies, chronic infections, and other problems. (http://www.naturalnews.com/024985_cortisol_blood_fatigue.html)

Drinking coffee is also highly addictive, as many who regularly consume it suffer withdrawal symptoms such as headaches when they try to stop. While it may give its drinkers a buzz that helps them through their busy days, coffee ends up exhausting the body's energy reserves, which can lead to irritability, confusion, severe mood swings, and other problems. (http://www.naturalnews.com/012352.html)

Instead of coffee, why not try naturally exposing your skin to between 15 and 30 minutes a day of unfiltered sunlight, or supplementing with between 2,000 and 10,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D3 every day? This simple, inexpensive, and proven health regimen will not only help protect you against skin cancer, but will also improve your health in many other areas while preventing a myriad of chronic illnesses. No medical bills for some Colorado shooting victims

Three hospitals taking care of people wounded in the Colorado theater shooting said Wednesday they will limit or completely wipe out medical bills for the victims.

Some victims, many of them young, are uninsured and face mounting hospital bills.

Children's Hospital Colorado announced it would use donations and its charity care fund to cover the medical expenses of the uninsured. For those who do have insurance, the hospital says it will waive all co-pays for shooting victims it is treating.

"We are committed to supporting these families as they heal," according to a statement from the hospital, which treated six shooting victims.

HealthOne, which owns the Medical Center of Aurora and Swedish Medical Center, also says it will limit or eliminate charges based on the individual circumstances of the patients. Those hospitals have treated 22 shooting victims.

There was no immediate word on what the other two hospitals would to do.

The victims, however, still face a long recovery ahead and the associated medical costs ? without health insurance. And HealthOne cautioned that its policy may not apply to all doctors working in its hospitals.

Members of the public, along with Warner Bros., the studio that released the Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," have contributed nearly $2 million to help victims pay their bills. One family is raising money on its own online.

There's no exact count of how many of the victims have no health insurance. But statistics suggest many of them might not be covered.

Nearly one in three Coloradans, or about 1.5 million, either have no health insurance or have coverage that is inadequate, according to a 2011 report by The Colorado Trust, a health care advocacy group.

The highest uninsured rate was among adults between 18 and 34.

And many of those injured in the shootings are in that age group.

State officials said they are not sure whether any of the victims qualify for emergency Medicaid assistance available to needy patients. Victims could also get financial assistance from a state program that helps people hurt during crimes.

Among the uninsured victims of the movie-theater attack is a 23-year-old aspiring comic, Caleb Medley, who is in critical condition with a head wound and whose wife, Katie, gave birth to their first child, Hugo, on Tuesday.

His family and friends said they have set a goal of raising $500,000 to cover his hospital bills and other expenses and were nearly halfway there on Wednesday.

"All the money that is donated is going straight to Caleb, Katie and Hugo to help them with medical bills, getting back on their feet, help with the baby items," friend Michael West said. "Anything and everything that they need."

Hospitals are required by federal law to stabilize patients during emergencies without regard to their ability to pay.

"The issue most probably facing the hospitals and patients in a situation like Aurora is what comes after 'stabilization,'" said Dr. Howard Brody, director of the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and a frequent critic of excessive medical costs.

"Many of these people I assume will need prolonged and expensive rehabilitation after their immediate injuries are dealt with, and that seems precisely what hospitals today are less and less willing to cover out of their own funds, and no law requires that they do so, as far as I am aware," he said.

Medley is in a medically induced coma, but West said he has been showing signs of improvement, relying less on a ventilator to breathe. Medley's wife, 21-year-old Katie Medley, gave birth on Tuesday, one floor above his room at University of Colorado Hospital.

Miracle baby of the Aurora tragedy

Standup comedian Gabriel Iglesias, who has appeared on Comedy Central, planned to headline a Denver fundraiser for Medley next week.

The fundraising might actually make Medley ineligible for some income-related assistance. His family and all other victims are already meeting with victim advocates, the case workers who deal with people hurt during crimes. The advocates determine what services they need and what assistance they qualify for.

"We have individuals who will need a lifetime of care, or a lifetime of accommodation, and our job is to make sure those needs are met," said Karla Maraccini, deputy director for community partnerships in thre office of Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Van Halen and the Brown M&Ms - Business Innovation Zone

M&M's Coconut

M&M?s Coconut (Photo credit: Dawn Huczek)

Jason Stone of Davis Brown Law presented to the BIZ Networking Group last week on contracts and how to stay out of trouble.? To make a particular point Stone told? the story of the band Van Halen?s brown M&M clause in their contract with entertainment promoters in the 1980?s. Embedded deep within the notorious party band?s lengthy contract which detailed every aspect of stage construction with a particular emphasis on safety, was an obscure clause that a bowl of M&M?s devoid of all brown M&M?s was to be provided backstage. Rather than being the ego indulgent demand of self-absorbed rock stars, it was a clever means of assuring that the older venues being visited had read the contract in sufficient detail that the band could feel safe when they took the stage. If they found no M&M?s or brown M&M?s they knew the contract had not been read with enough attention to guarantee their safety.

Brilliant!

After an eight-month inquiry, former FBI director Louis Freeh's firm produced a 267-page report that concluded that Paterno and other top Penn State officials hushed up child sex abuse allegations against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky for more than a decade for fear of bad publicity, allowing Sandusky to prey on other youngsters. The revelations contained in the report have stirred a debate over whether the statue should remain. (AP Photo/Centre Daily Times, Abby Drey) MANDATORY CREDIT; MAGS OUT

Ever since it became public knowledge in November that Joe Paterno didn't do everything he could to stop former assistant Jerry Sandusky from sexually abusing boys at Penn State football facilities, organizations have been rethinking the honors given the longtime Nittany Lions coach.

This is a look at institutions that removed Paterno's name or imagery after Sandusky's arrest.

BIG TEN

A year before the conference got its 12th team (Penn State was No. 11), the league came out with a raft of trophies that appeared to be named by committee. For the upcoming championship game, the prize was to be the Stagg-Paterno Trophy, named for former University of Chicago coach Amos Alonso Stagg and Penn State's legend. Less than a week after Paterno was fired by the university, the Big Ten announced that it was taking Paterno's name off the trophy, which had yet to be awarded. Wisconsin beat Michigan State to become the first team to win the Stagg Championship Trophy.

NIKE

At Paterno's memorial service in January, Nike founder and CEO Phil Knight won a thunderous standing ovation when he said: "If there is a villain in this tragedy, it lies in that investigation and not in Joe Paterno's response." Then the Freeh Report found that Paterno helped hush up allegations of child sex abuse against Sandusky for more than a decade. That same day, Knight said he had been wrong, and Nike's president took the name off the Joe Paterno Child Development Center at Nike headquarters in Oregon.

NITTANYVILLE (FORMERLY PATERNOVILLE)

For years, the area of tents where Penn State students camped outside Beaver Stadium for prime seats was called Paternoville, in a nod to a similar phenomenon at Duke named Krzyzewskiville for the Blue Devils' basketball coach. The student group that manages the Penn State area changed the name to Nittanyville last week.

THE STATUE

As soon as Sandusky was charged and it was known that Paterno had failed to do anything more than report an incident to his superiors, questions about the fate of the statue of Paterno outside Beaver Stadium began. By the time the Freeh Report came out, it already seemed as if the statue with the words "Educator, Coach, Humanitarian" might not stay in place. Sure enough, early Sunday morning, crews erected a screen and took the statue down behind it. On Tuesday, the wall behind the statue came down, too.

BROWN

Brown University, the late coach's alma mater, said that it's reviewing whether to remove Paterno from the school's athletic hall of fame, too. Paterno, a member of the Ivy League school's class of 1950, was inducted into the hall in 1977. Brown already took his name off an award given annually to the school's top male freshman athlete.

STATE COLLEGE MURAL (HALO ONLY)

A mural titled "Inspiration" including Paterno and Sandusky and other members of the State College community was painted near campus 12 years ago. After Sandusky was charged, his likeness was painted over. After Paterno died, artist Michael Pilato added a halo, to signify his death, not his holiness. After the release of the Freeh Report, he painted over the halo. He added a large blue ribbon, instead, on Paterno's lapel symbolizing support for child abuse victims. Sandusky has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing.

CONNECTICUT MIDDLE SCHOOL MURAL

State College didn't have a monopoly on Paterno murals. Great Oak Middle School in Oxford, Conn., has a series of them, depicting admirable historic figures. They're going to paint over the portion that depicts Paterno, the Hartford Courant's website reported.

NCAA

As part of the NCAA's sanctions handed down on Monday, 112 Penn State wins were vacated. Paterno was credited with 111 of those, and reached the Division I record of 409 last Oct. 29 with a win over Illinois. Late the following week, Sandusky was charged, and Paterno was fired in the aftermath.

On Monday, all those wins were erased, along with Paterno's name atop the record books. Officially, he now has 298 victories and former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden holds the top spot in the NCAA record book with 377 major-college wins. Eddie Robinson, who led Grambling to 408 victories, regained the Division I mark.

The NCAA also took back the Gerald Ford Award it gave to Paterno in January 2011. The honor is for someone who has been a lifelong advocate of college athletics.
