Home Improvement on a Budget ? 4 Top Tips

Whether you?re looking to sell your house and want to increase the value without forking out for a costly renovation, or you simply want a low-cost way to improve the appearance of your home so that you can enjoy it yourself, here are five cheap but effective home improvement ideas that you won?t need to break the bank to try?

Paint the Front Door

I popped downstairs this morning to find that some lovely person had re-painted my old, worn, white front door a luxurious shade of hazelnut brown (I live in a shared block of flats ?this wasn?t some random stranger sneaking around in the night painting front doors by the way!).

It?s surprising how big a transformation this simple update can create.

Your front door is the very first thing you or a guest will see when arriving at your home, and it?s an age-old saying that first impressions count, so sprucing yours up when it starts to get discoloured or cracked in an easy way to make a big change. Plus, it won?t take more than a small can of paint so you can easily get this one done for under $32!

Paint the Walls

Whilst I?m on the subject of painting, if you?re more interested in transforming how your home looks on the inside than the outside, a fresh lick of paint will work wonders here, too. As a rule, lighter colours will lead to a brighter, more airy appeal that is perfect for summertime and will also make your rooms appear larger and cleaner.

However, don?t be afraid to experiment ? if painting all four walls red is a little much for you, why not try three white walls with one red one? You can make this the centrepiece of the room, either with a fireplace, sofa or some other stand-out piece placed against it for a truly eye-catching look.

Replace your Carpets

Nothing screams ?outdated? like old, worn carpets and threadbare rugs. Carpet need not be expensive; expect to pay around $9 to $15 per meter square for a basic but good-quality option that will instantly transform any room. A brightly coloured carpet will bring a sense of fun and style, whilst a cream or other pale-colored choice works like light-coloured walls to make the room seem larger.

If you are redecorating with the aim of selling your home, opt for a neutral tone and plain, block colors -patterns and bright colors may appeal to you but can be a major off-putting factor when it comes to home viewings. Alternatively, if you simply can?t afford that new carpet, spend some hours giving your current ones a good clean with carpet shampoo or powder, or invest in a large rug to cover any worn or stained patches underneath.

Buy a Wardrobe Organizer?

Or under-bed storage boxes, or a new set of shelves? Basically, invest in whatever good-looking storage solutions you can afford because you?ll not only benefit from being able to find things quicker and easier, but your home will also look much, much better when all the clutter is tidied away into attractive boxes and units.

Nothing ruins a stylish home like mess, but thanks to some funky storage solutions even the laziest of people can keep their homes looking well-tidied at all times!

Do you have any other great, low-cost ideas to improve your home?s appearance?
