TREYNOR, Iowa ? When it's time for Treynor youth sports teams to practice, they usually have to leave town.
The city of almost 1,000 has no recreation complex, so youth teams practice and play most of their games elsewhere. The high school provides access when possible, but space is limited.
A group of residents is working to change that.
The Vision Treynor Group recently purchased 63 acres north of Iowa Highway 92 to construct a facility with baseball, softball, football and soccer fields, along with picnic areas and a community pool. The price tag for the future location of the Treynor Family Recreation Complex is $600,000, funded in large part by gifts from TS Bank.
?We play virtually no home games in our Little League programs because of the lack of facilities,? said Travis Castle, president of the Vision Treynor Group. ?We're excited about purchasing the land and look forward to making this project a reality.?
The vision group formed three years ago. Castle said a survey from the group found high demand for a sports complex, pool, fitness center and trails.
The old city pool was closed almost a decade ago.
Phase one of the project includes purchase of the land, developing infrastructure, constructing ballfields and developing green space for football and soccer fields. Castle said the group continues to raise the $3.2 million necessary for phase one, and if all goes well, there could be a groundbreaking this spring.
Vision Group Vice President Glen Fleming, who manages the Treynor Recreation Program, said some teams now practice in Council Bluffs ? and soccer teams have practiced on open space in a cemetery.
About 260 kids from preschool through eighth grade participate in Treynor sports teams, with 8 to 10 percent annual growth, Fleming said.
Treynor Mayor Bryce Poland and others said the facility will benefit the people of Treynor while also boosting the town economically. The Vision Treynor Group hopes the complex will host youth sports tournaments.
Along with visitors, the Treynor Family Recreation Complex could bring a few more residents as well.
?One of our major goals is to continue to make Treynor a great place to raise a family,? Castle said. ?We feel these amenities will continue to attract people to live, work and raise their kids here.?
