How to make your smartphone's ringtones smarter

6 hrs.

If you have the same ringtone for calls and alert for messages regardless of what they are, you might want to create your?own and assign specific tones to specific contacts. Can you do more with ringtones and alerts so they're actually informative and not just the same annoying sound?

Actually you can do a lot! Ringtone and alert settings, as well as third-party apps and hacks to do even more, have come a long way. Both Android and iOS have plenty of customization options that make your ringtones more useful. Let's take a look at what you do on both mobile operating systems.

Create Custom Ringtones and Alerts
Creating your own custom ringtones and alerts is pretty simple. On Android, all you need is an AAC or MP3 file, which you can create on your computer and transfer over to your phone. If you want to trim an existing song or sound, an app called Ringdroid does that for free. (For detailed usage instructions, read this.) Once you've created your specific ringtone or alert, you can set it as the default in Settings ?> Sound ?> Phone Ringtone.

iOS requires additional work because Apple would prefer you paid extra money for ringtones and alerts through the iTunes Store. To work around this limitation, simply shorten the sound or song you want as your new ringtone or alert (if desired) and convert it to AAC format. There are plenty of apps that offer this functionality for free, such as Adapter, but iTunes can as well. (For detailed instructions, read this.) Take the converted AAC file and change its extension to .m4r. Add that file to iTunes, which will see it as a ringtone, and sync your iPhone.

Note: If you simply want to set a song or other audio file as an alarm, you don't need to go through this process. iOS 6 alarms let you choose almost any ?audio in your music library when setting them up.

Individualize for Specific People
Now that you know how to create your own ringtones and alerts for your phone, you can start setting specific ones for individual contacts. You could add songs that relate to the person calling or texting. You could record the person saying their name and use that as an alert so you'd know exactly who's contacting you. You could also create tones and alerts that escalate in urgency and assign them to contacts based on importance. Personally, I opted to just make my alerts more soothing because I found the defaults loud and annoying.?

When your tones are individualized, there are many ways to make them more useful and informative. While any of those suggested ideas work, figure out what you want to accomplish with your notifications before you move forward. Chances are you have a lot of contacts and so assigning custom settings for many or all of them takes time. Figure out an approach that provides you with the information you want every time someone calls or texts.

Once you have your approach in mind, setting individual alerts is easy. On Android, simply edit any contact on your phone, tap the menu button, and choose Options. From there you can set a ringtone for that specific person. To do the same for text messages, you'll need a third-party SMS app, and Handcent is the popular choice. From Handcent, simply open a contact, tap Settings ?> Icon & Personalization ?> Notification Settings. From there you can set an individual tone for that person. If you don't want an entirely new app for SMS, you can download SMS tone customizers like WhoIsIt Lite (Free) Custom SMS Tones ($1) instead. WhoIsIt ($2) can set custom vibration patterns, too.

On iOS, open up the Phone or Contacts app and choose the person who's going to receive the custom ringtone and/or alert sound. Tap Edit, and your options will expand. Toward the end of the page, you'll find two tab: one starts with ringtone and one starts with text tone. Both are likely set to the default. Simply tap either tab to set a new tone. Along with tone options, you'll also find a vibration tab. If you tap that, you can set a custom vibration pattern for each contact. Apple offers a few preset options you can choose from, but scroll down to the bottom and choose Create New Vibration to make your own. From there you'll just tap on the screen rhythmically until you're satisfied. Save the vibration pattern and that's how your iPhone will vibrate when you receive a call or message from that specific person.

Customize Alerts on a Per-App Basis
Customizing alerts for specific apps requires a bit of extra work, but if you like to know which app is bugging you there are actions you can take. On Android, your options vary by app, by device, and by the version of Android you're running. Certain app settings may allow you to set custom notifications, so check there first. Certain devices provide various notification options, so you may also be able to change some app notifications from your Android's Settings app. Neither of these options can override everything, but previously mentioned WhoIsIt ($2) can offer a crazy amount of customization. It'll even let you set specific notification sounds for email contacts.

UPDATE: Reader ShirinDirce suggested Light Flow, an app that can customize notifications to, perhaps, an excess. It goes beyond tones and handles light and vibration notifications as well.

On iOS, you need to jailbreak and install a hack called PushTone. All it does is add a PushTone option to every app in Notification Center so you can assign it a tone just like any other setting.

If you want to take this a step further, you can customize your notification system using an app called Pushover. It'll give you more control over what shows up on your phone and when.

That's all you really need to do to customize your ringtones and alerts to make them more useful. Ultimately you'll have to decide on a system that works best for you, but the technical side of things is pretty easy if you know where to look.

Reflect and relax: reasons to write? ? Oxford University Press ...

Peter Redpath, co-author of Incredible English second edition, takes a look at writing exercises in the classroom.

The four skills are listening, reading, writing, and speaking. These are often divided into the Productive skills and Receptive skills. The Productive skills are Speaking and Writing. The Receptive skills are Listening and Reading. First of all let?s think about what makes writing different to speaking.

Well, for a start, the spoken word is not concrete: if you get it wrong it doesn?t hang around your neck like a millstone! The written word is concrete. When you write, what you produce is permanent and so if you make mistakes, they are there for all to see. This can be a source of worry for some pupils. Clearly, we need to ensure that when they are writing children receive lots of support. The aim is not just producing a piece of writing but to build their confidence in their ability to produce it.

Writing is sometimes called the ?forgotten skill?. It is certainly the last acquired. For most language learners it would seem to be the least important. After all, isn?t language mainly listened to and spoken? And this would seem to be what most learners want to do with the language. However, I think we need to be careful here. Let?s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Writing may come last as an acquired skill and least in importance to many of the learners when they are older, but for the younger learner there are a number of positive aspects. What are they?

To begin with it is allowing language production and consolidation through a different medium to the spoken word. It demands an effort which aids learning. It provides time for reflection and gives the children time to think about, and get a feel for, how the language hangs together. It creates quiet time in the classroom; the children are working at their own pace and the teacher is free to give individual attention to them.

How can writing be approached?

There are two broad approaches to how we can teach writing to our learners: product writing and process writing. Both these approaches have their adherents. I?m not going to go into the pros and cons of each in this blog post. My feeling is that a blend of the two approaches to writing probably makes the most sense with the balance leaning towards product writing in the early years. Other teachers may disagree and I would like to hear from them.

How does product writing work?

First of all we introduce the children to written texts. As they read they are being exposed to the vocabulary and structures that they will need later on. At the same time they are also being exposed to the conventions of the written form: punctuation, paragraphing, and text organisation.

If we take it step by step it goes something like this:

  • model text
  • controlled practice
  • organisation of ideas
  • production

It might help if I put some flesh on those bare bones. For example, the children read a short text from a Fan magazine It is an interview with a boy band. They work on comprehension through reading tasks. Then, they practise particular features of the text ? the controlled practice. This could be how to use and, but and?too.?Once the children have completed the?controlled practice they are?given the opportunity to create an interview for themselves. They choose a sports star or a musician or even a member of their family. First they plan their work and then they write their interview mirroring the original text they read. This is Product writing.

It seems to me that starting with Product writing provides children with a structured, safe environment in which to produce their work. Many of you will probably argue that it is restrictive. At which point we touch on?the old accuracy/fluency debate. Do you remember it? We could loosely sum it up by saying that Product writing goes from accuracy to fluency. Process writing, in contrast, goes from fluency to?accuracy. (More or less!) Do you have an opinion on how we should approach writing for younger learners?

Lindsay Lohan allegedly assaulted at NYC hotel

ABC News Reports:

Actress Lindsay Lohan was allegedly assaulted early this morning by a man she had invited back to her room at a posh New York City hotel, police said.

The 26-year-old actress told police she met Christian LaBella, 25, at celeb hot spot 1 Oak and invited him, along with three of her friends, back to her room at the W Hotel in Union Square early Sunday morning.

Once in the room, Lohan told police she found pictures of herself on LaBella's phone and confronted him. LaBella allegedly threw her on a bed when she did not hand over his phone, leaving her with scratches, police said.

According to police, Lohan then ran out and down several flights of stairs where she was again confronted by LaBella, who she said tried to choke her from behind.

At this point, she told police, she pulled the hotel fire alarm disabling the elevators and summoning police to the scene, police said.

Anticipating LaBella was in the stairwells, officers covered all of the hotel's exits until he was apprehended as he was attempting to leave, police said. He was identified by Lohan and a friend.

LaBella, of Valley Village, Calif., was charged with two misdemeanor counts of third-degree assault and two counts of harassment.

It wasn't clear whether the 25-year-old had hired an attorney or how he intends to plea.

A representative for the actress said she was "fully cooperating with the investigation."

Two days ago, the actress spoke out against violence on Twitter.

"Don't be afraid to speak to someone about verbal, sexual, or any kind of physical abuse. It's your life & you are in control of your destiny" she tweeted.

Country?s debt at ?comfortable level?, says UDA boss

Nur Jazlan said ?there?s no country in the world that tables a budget surplus?. ? File pic

JOHOR BARU, Sept 30 ? The people should not be concerned over the national debt as it is still at the low level compared with European countries, the United States and developing countries, according to UDA Holdings Bhd chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed

The Pulai MP said the country?s debt at 53.7 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) is still at the comfortable level.

?The debt rate (at 53.7 per cent) is manageable by the government and is considered to be low compared with European countries and the US.

?Compared with developing countries, (the debt) also still at lower and comfortable level. As long as we can pay our immediate interest requirement, we are still safe,? he said here today.

Nur Jazlan, who is also a chartered accountant, urged the rakyat not to be influenced by the opposition who claimed that the country?s debt was high.

He said the country also does not have any problem in tabling a budget deficit, considering the various sources of wealth that can be utilised to accommodate the deficit.

?There?s no country in the world that tables a budget surplus... they all propose budget deficit and loans, the only difference is that Malaysia has room to implement a budget deficit as we have various sources of wealth to accommodate the deficit,? he said.

Malaysia can depend on revenue from commodities and oil as well as assets that can be liquidated to accommodate the deficit.

Budget 2013 announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak last Friday targeted to reduce the budget deficit to four per cent next year compared with 4.5 per cent this year.

Apart from that, Nur Jazlan said the country still has ample room to improve its taxation system to enable it to increase revenue from tax collection.

He said it was wrong to introduce an ?austerity budget? now as it would give an impact to investor?s confidence as well as the country?s economy.

?A Budget that shrinks the country?s economy will give negative impact to the economic performance and damage the rakyat,? said Nur Jazlan.

He also lauded the government?s move to allocate a huge fund to ensure the young generation living in big towns nationwide are capable of owning their own houses. ? Bernama
