Van Persie late show earns United win at Saints

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:23 p.m. ET Sept. 2, 2012

LONDON (AP) - Robin van Persie made up for an embarrassing failure from the penalty spot by completing a hat trick with two late goals in Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday, earning the English giants a second straight win in the Premier League.

In a fitting way to mark United manager Alex Ferguson's 1,000th league game in charge, Van Persie equalized in the 87th minute before heading home a corner in the second minute of injury time for his fourth goal since joining from Arsenal for $38 million in the offseason.

Arsenal showed earlier there is life after Van Persie when new signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored their first goals for the club in a 2-0 win over struggling Liverpool.

The loss leaves Liverpool rooted in the bottom three after the club's worst start to a season in 50 years, compounding its woes after a failure to add some much-needed signings to the squad on Friday's transfer deadline day.

In the day's other match, Aston Villa earned its first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle, only being denied victory because of Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning second-half equalizer.

Van Persie's late show, which took him to 100 Premier League goals in 197 games, will have come as a mighty relief for the Netherlands striker, after his impudent chipped penalty was clawed away by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in the 68th minute.

The score was 2-1 to Southampton at the time and United looked headed for a second loss in three games before Van Persie's goals.

"I don't know what I was thinking with the penalty. I was going to hit it hard but at the last second I changed my mind," Van Persie said. "I'm quite disappointed about it. I ask certain standards from my game and at 2-1 down you cannot take a penalty like that."

Ferguson, famous for what the British media calls the "hairdryer treatment" in the dressing room when his team or player underperforms, was all smiles after the match despite Van Persie's error of judgment.

"I was surprised because every time I've seen him take a penalty he usually rattles it into the corners, so I was confident," Ferguson said. "But he made up for it."

Having started the season with a 1-0 loss at Everton, this win lifted United up to fifth place on six points, one behind neighbor and reigning champion Manchester City and three behind early leader Chelsea.

Arsenal is in eighth place, a point further back than United.

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) - Athletic Bilbao scored two second-half goals to beat Valladolid 2-0 on Sunday, giving the Basques their first win of the Spanish league season.

Aritz Aduriz, starting in place of Fernando Llorente again since the Spain striker said he wanted to leave his boyhood club, swept in a loose ball to break through for Bilbao in the 69th.

Forward Markel Susaeta, who had hit the post earlier, added another goal six minutes later with a curling shot into the top right corner.

They were the first goals Valladolid had conceded this season.

Also, Sevilla drew 0-0 at Rayo Vallecano, while 10-man Levante came from behind to win 3-2 against visiting Espanyol.

Sevilla's Alvaro Negredo and Ivan Rakitic both missed penalties against Rayo, which remained undefeated in the league despite having goalkeeper Ruben Martinez sent off for fouling Rakitic in the area with 20 minutes left.

In Valencia, Italian forward Samuele Longo, on loan from Inter Milan, and Sergio Tejera gave Espanyol the lead with first-half goals. But Juanlu Gomez pulled one back with a long-range volley in the 54th, and German left back Christian Lell leveled for Levante two minutes later.

Levante midfielder Vicente Iborra received his second booking in the 80th, but Espanyol failed to threaten and Espanyol defender Raul Rodriguez redirected Miguel "Michel" Alfonso's cross into his own net in injury time to gift Levante its first league victory of the season.

Later, Barcelona looked to rebound from its loss to Real Madrid in the Spanish Supercup against Valencia, Madrid aims for its first win in the Spanish league against Granada.

---

ROME (AP) - Defending champion Juventus took provisional command of Serie A with a 4-1 win against 10-man Udinese on Sunday that extended the Bianconeri's unbeaten streak in the league to 41 matches.

The match turned when Udinese goalkeeper Zeljko Brkic was sent off for a foul on Sebastian Giovinco, leading to a penalty kick that Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal converted in the 14th minute. Mirko Vucinic doubled the lead in first-half added time and Giovinco added two more goals, in the 53rd and 71st.

Andrea Lazzari pulled one back for Udinese in the 78th.

Juventus has a full six points, having also kept a clean sheet in its opener against Parma last weekend.

Later, Napoli and Inter Milan were also aiming for their second wins of the season.

---

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - Thomas Mueller scored two goals and Bayern Munich rallied to rout Stuttgart 6-1 despite leaving the most expensive player in Bundesliga history on the bench for most of the match on Sunday.

Javi Martinez watched as Bayern scored three goals inside the first six minutes of the second half, then came on in the 77th for his Bundesliga debut.

By then, Stuttgart was down to 10 men following the ejection of Vedad Ibisevic in the 74th.

Martinez signed for Bayern this week on a Bundesliga record euro40 million ($50 million) transfer from Athletic Bilbao.

The emphatic win left Bayern atop the standings on goal difference over Eintracht Frankfurt, the only other team to start the season with two wins.

Two-time defending champion Borussia Dortmund dropped points in a 1-1 draw at Nuremberg on Saturday.

---

PARIS (AP) - Andre-Pierre Gignac maintained his fine form by scoring another crucial goal as Marseille beat Rennes 3-1 on Sunday to extend its perfect start and return to the top of the French league.

Mocked by critics last year for his lack of fitness and excess weight, Gignac has bounced back with a vengeance this season. He has scored three times in four league games, including the winning goal away to Montpellier in the last round. He also set up Marseille's opening goal for right back Jeremy Morel on Sunday.

Marseille, which has been selling players in a bid to stave off mounting debts, has 12 points from four games - two more than Lyon.

With the match poised at 1-1, Gignac struck in the 84th minute with a stunning strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area after Rennes had failed to properly clear the ball.

Marseille took the lead in the 35th when Gignac got behind the Rennes defense and his cross was turned in by Morel.

Rennes equalized in the 57th, winger Julien Feret running onto Mevlut Erding's pass and shooting firmly past goalkeeper Steve Mandanda from close range.

Marseille sealed the win deep into injury time through Rennes right back Romain Danze's own goal.

Bordeaux missed the chance to move level with Lyon in second place when it was held to a 1-1 draw by Nice.

Later Sunday, big-spending Paris Saint-Germain was looking for its first win when it travelled to play Lille.

---

GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) - Motherwell climbed above Celtic to the top of the Scottish Premier League with a 4-1 home win over Inverness on Sunday thanks to Michael Higdon's hat trick.

Celtic's 2-2 home draw with Hibernian on Saturday opened the door for Motherwell, which took full advantage to stay unbeaten after five games this season and sit a point above the reigning champions.

Tom Hateley and Higson scored within a minute of each other to put Motherwell 2-0 up by the 12th minute, and Higdon competed his hat trick with goals in the 72nd and 79th.

Dundee moved off the foot of the table by winning 1-0 ay Hearts, dropping St. Johnstone to last place.

GOP candidates back in Ohio as ?success? party

By? Joe Vardon

The Columbus Dispatch Saturday September 1, 2012 7:20 AM

Mary Altaffer | Associated Press

Republican vice-presidential nominee Paul?Ryan arrives with his wife, Janna, in Columbus. Ryan is rumored to be attending a portion of the Ohio State football game against Miami University ? his alma mater ? today, while his running mate, Mitt Romney, will be campaigning in Cincinnati.

TAMPA, Fla. ? What was a trial balloon last week in Powell is now a national battle cry for Republicans.

?In America, we celebrate success. We don?t apologize for it,? GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney said to the country during his televised acceptance speech on Thursday night at the packed Tampa Bay Times Forum.

Romney will campaign in Cincinnati this morning with the Republican National Convention behind him ? a week when he and his surrogates framed the GOP as the party that embraces success and the Democrats as the ones who attack it.

Sources said Romney?s running mate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, will attend a portion of today?s noontime football game pitting Ohio State against Miami University, his alma mater. A Romney campaign official would say only that Ryan will be in central Ohio today.

Romney and Ryan made the point last week in a joint appearance in Powell that success, particularly in business, should be celebrated. And it quickly became clear that Republicans would use their convention to turn a summer of blistering critiques by President Barack Obama?s campaign of Romney?s personal wealth and history at Bain Capital against the Democrats.

By the time Romney had said on Thursday night that ?the centerpiece of the president?s entire re-election campaign is attacking success,? everyone from Romney?s wife to the national party chairman already had issued similar indictments.

?It amazes me to see his history of success actually being attacked,? Ann Romney said Tuesday night. ?Are those really the values that made our country great??

The same day, Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus said Obama and Democrats are ? satisfied with attacking the American dream.?Earlier, the GOP chairman told Ohio delegates about how parents point out that big home in the neighborhood and tell their kids that they?re praying for the same thing for them, or even a house twice as big.One reason Republicans went there time and again in their speeches this week: Obama?s campaign ads and attack lines are effective. For months, Romney has endured assaults over everything from his refusal to release more tax returns to his off-shore bank accounts. He was criticized for the profits he made at Bain Capital while the firm drove companies it acquired into bankruptcy, and the car elevator at his home in California. That narrative may well continue on Monday when Obama visits Toledo and Cleveland.

?The question we?ve raised about Gov. Romney?s experience is he?s told everyone his goal was job creation in the private sector, but even his partners have admitted it was profit creation at any costs,? said Obama-campaign press secretary Ben LaBolt, who was in Tampa for the Republicans? convention.

?He profited off of outsourcing jobs and bankrupting companies. The question we?ve raised: Is that who Ohioans or all Americans want to see in the Oval Office, someone who says that that?s what formed his experience and his policy??

LaBolt rejects the Republicans? ?success? argument, pointing to the 18 tax cuts he said Obama has given to small businesses.

But for Republicans, the argument stretches beyond Romney?s personal wealth, and yes, it includes a rejection of Obama?s tax policies.

The president wants to let the Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making $200,000 per year and families making $250,000 or more. He?s also proposed that people making more than $1 million per year pay a minimum 30 percent tax rate ? it?s known as the Buffett Rule. Obama portrays this as people paying their fair share; Republicans call it a punishment of success.

There?s also Obama?s ?you didn?t build that? line relating to businesses, which Democrats say was taken out of context but Republicans hammered on all week as they made their case.

Republicans throughout the week also decried ?regulations? the Obama administration has placed on businesses, though those regulations often go unnamed. They throw Obama?s federal health-care law into the mix as well.

?I get to talking about punishing success when I talk about higher taxes on risk-taking and investment,? Gov. John Kasich said. ?If you?re going to tax risk-taking higher, people are going to take fewer risks. I think it?s an issue. I think managing the debt?s an issue. ? Regulations. It?s all those things.?

LaBolt counters that ?Romney and Ryan have refused to ask the wealthy for a single dime to help reduce the deficit, and every bipartisan panel that?s looked at this said it?s impossible to reduce the deficit without additional revenue.?

He said Obama wants to return to the tax rates from the Clinton era ? a time of balanced budgets and robust employment. Both campaigns agree the election this fall is a choice between these differing beliefs.

But is Obama actually envious or disdainful of Americans? success, as his opponents charge?

?I don?t think the Democrats are, but there is a segment of the population that is and they play to their emotions. They?re using that to get them to vote for them,? said Timothy Manning, an Ohio Republican delegate from Willoughby Hills.

California Gov. Jerry Brown challenges New Jersey's Chris Christie to fitness test

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown may be a "retread," but he's confident he can run circles around New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Brown earlier this week dismissed barbs Christie made about Brown to California Republican delegates this week, but now he's challenging the morbidly obese governor to a series of athletic contests.

"There's nothing wrong with being a little retread," Brown told union members in a Los Angeles speech Thursday. "Not as much hair, I've slowed down a little bit, but I have to tell you, I ran three miles in 29 minutes two nights ago.

"And I hereby challenge Gov. Christie to a three-mile run, a push-up contest and a chin-up contest. And whatever he wants to bet, I have no doubt of the outcome."

Christie told the state's GOP delegates this week that he couldn't believe California voters elected the then-72-year old former two-time governor over Republican Meg Whitman, the former eBay CEO who now runs Hewlett-Packard.

"California made a bad choice by going with an old retread," Christie said. "I've gotta tell you, Jerry Brown? Jerry Brown? I mean, he won the New Jersey presidential primary over Jimmy Carter when I was 14 years old."

That got Brown's gander up.

"Why should I be governor? Why not? I may know a helluva lot more than you," Brown said. "Because when you were 14, I was passing the farm labor bill. I was passing worker protection in California."

Cracked Brown: "That's the first time

I've ever been attacked at a convention, so I feel that I'm finally coming into my own."

(AP) ? Neil Armstrong was a humble hero who saw himself as a team player and never capitalized on his celebrity as the first man to walk on the moon, mourners said Friday outside a private service attended by fellow space pioneers, including his two crewmates on the historic Apollo 11 mission.

Hundreds of people attended a closed service for Armstrong Friday at a private club in suburban Cincinnati. A national memorial service has been scheduled for Sept. 12 in Washington, although no other details have been released on the service or burial plans for Armstrong. He died Saturday at age 82.

Among some 10 former astronauts attending Friday were John Glenn and Armstrong's crew for the 1969 moon landing, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

"You'll never get a hero, in my view, like Neil Armstrong," said Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, who praised Armstrong after the service for his wisdom and humility in the way he handled becoming a global icon. "It's going to be hard to top."

"America has truly lost a legend," said Eugene Cernan, an Apollo astronaut who is the last man to have walked on the moon.

Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, eulogized Armstrong "as a reluctant hero" and said afterward the service was a mix of emotion and humor, with Armstrong's two sons talking about him as a father and grandfather.

"He touched the lives of so many," Portman said.

"He was the embodiment of everything this nation is all about," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. Armstrong, he said, had a courageous drive for exploration while being an "incredibly humble" man who probably wouldn't have wanted all the attention of Friday's service.

It included a Navy ceremonial guard, a bagpiper corps and songs including "When the Saints Go Marching In." Four Navy fighter planes flew over at the end of the service, one flying upward in tribute to Armstrong, a former Navy pilot who flew combat missions in Korea.

The moon made a rare full appearance Friday ? the second full moon in August. Most months have just one.

Raised in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong developed an early love for aviation.

He commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966 and Apollo 11's historic moon landing on July 20, 1969. As a worldwide audience watched on TV, Armstrong took the step on the lunar surface he called "one giant leap for mankind."

Juri Taalman, 78, said he made a special trip from Hartford, Conn., just to stand across the road from the club where the service was held, in tribute to Armstrong.

He said he and his wife were on their honeymoon in Amsterdam the day of the moon landing. He recalled hotel employees bringing champagne to the guests watching Armstrong's first steps together on television, and an Englishman lifting his glass in a toast "to all mankind!"

Taalman's voice cracked as he discussed his visit Friday.

"I just think a really great man has passed, and the world is poorer for it," he said.

Earlier Friday, Cernan and Apollo 13 commander James Lovell spoke at a Cincinnati hospital to help launch a children's health fund in Armstrong's memory.

Cernan and Lovell recounted visiting U.S troops in Iraq and Afghanistan with Armstrong, saying he always had an inspirational impact when meeting troops, schoolchildren and other admirers around the world.

Lovell said Armstrong was "a great American" who never capitalized on his celebrity and just "wanted to be a team player." While Armstrong had said any of the astronauts could have been the first to walk on the moon, Lovell and Cernan said Armstrong was the right choice because of the way he handled suddenly becoming an icon.

"There's nobody that I know of that could have accepted the challenge and responsibility that came with being that with more dignity than Neil Armstrong," Cernan said.

Lovell and Cernan said that they had visited Armstrong two months ago in his home in suburban Indian Hill, and that he cooked breakfast for them ? and burned the eggs.

"Neil Armstrong was probably one of the most human guys I've ever known in my life," Cernan said.

Armstrong's family has suggested memorial contributions to two scholarship funds in his name or to the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative at Cincinnati Children's. His wife, Carol, is on the hospital's board.

The astronauts were joined there Friday by 14-year-old Shane DiGiovanna, an aspiring aerospace engineer with a rare skin tissue disease. He is able to hear after a cochlear implant, with a device developed by a NASA scientist.

Before the announcement, Shane, who said Armstrong has always inspired him, quizzed the two astronauts about details of their missions. Lovell recounted the streams of oxygen that wrapped the Apollo 13 spacecraft "like a cocoon" after an oxygen tank explosion. The harrowing Apollo 13 flight was recounted in his book and depicted in the popular movie, in which Tom Hanks played Lovell.

After his space career, Armstrong returned to Ohio, teaching aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati and generally avoiding public view for most of the rest of his life.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999. He had two sons from a previous marriage.

In announcing his death, Armstrong's family requested that when people "see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Stop paying PLI or no further equity infusion, Centre tells Air India

The government-appointed oversight committee monitoring the implementation of Air India?s Turnaround Plan (TAP) has warned the national carrier that if it continues to pay Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) to its employees, the government will stop further equity infusion into the ailing carrier. The government has committed Rs 30,000 crore, to be paid in tranches till 2020, to keep the debt-laden carrier flying, as per a HT report by Tushar Srivastava. ?Equity infusion is tied to milestones achieved by the airline. The foremost condition of the TAP, approved by the Cabinet, was freezing of PLI till the airline turns profitable. This hasn?t happened till now,? a senior government official said.

The oversight committee met last week. ?RS Gujral, Secretary, Expenditure, chaired the meeting,? a source said. A senior AI official said they were hopeful of convincing the panel to release the next tranche of equity when it meets next. ?The Justice Dharmadhikari Committee that was formed to sort out integration issues in Air India had recommended that the company should continue paying PLI,? the official argued.

The Civil Aviation Ministry officials said the Cabinet?s decision was sacrosanct. ?It was the Cabinet that cleared equity infusion. It had set certain conditions for release of money and stopping PLI was foremost. The Dharmadhikari panel only made recommendations. They are not binding on the government,? said an official.

Roll over Beethoven! The Kia Hamsters are back

Kia

Kia's hamsters make their return in classic form in the latest Soul ad campaign.

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

Roll over Beethoven, make room Mozart.? The Kia hamsters are back and they?re turning a serious, 17th Century ballet into a wild, 21st Century electronic dance party in their newest ad campaign for the popular Kia Soul.

Few official spokes?er?rodents have clicked with the car buying community as effectively as what the Korean carmaker likes to call its ?hamstars.?? And their previous commercials have generated tens of millions of views on Youtube.com and elsewhere as they have gone viral like few other automotive ads.

?Ford Focus Set to Topple Toyota Corolla

The latest spot will make its debut today on 18,000 movie screens across the U.S. and then appear on the MTV Video Music Awards on September 6th.

In typically irreverent fashion, the newest campaign has been titled ?Bringing Down the House,? and is set in an 18th Century European opera house.? Set to the Axwell remix, ?In My Mind,? it shakes up the staid surroundings by turning them into a very 21st Century electronic dance party.

They're back. And this time they've gone way back in their time-traveling Kia Soul.

Considering their success ? and perhaps helping build their popularity ? Kia has made surprisingly judicious use of the hamsters.? They made their first appearance to assist with the launch of the Soul, an ?urban passenger vehicle,? three years ago.

Are Battery Car Sales Charging Up?

?Since the launch of the Soul in 2009, music has been a driving force in moving the Kia brand into the mainstream and connecting with consumers in a more relevant and conversational way,? said David Angelo, founder and chief creative officer, David&Goliath.? ?Our theme line, ?A new way to roll,? enables us to always bring a fresh musical perspective to each Soul execution while staying current with the latest pop culture trends.?

The commercial ? which Angelo calls ?both musically and visually unexpected? ? opens with the grandeur of an old MGM musical, though the Mozart-like conductor does have an odd gleam in his eye as he waves his baton to cue the orchestra and ballet dancers.? To the shock of everyone on-stage and off, a Kia Soul suddenly rises onto the set and the conductor rips off his mask to reveal he?s one of the hip-hop hamsters.? As might be expected, everyone in the house is busting moves by the time the spot fades to black.

How Automakers Will Get to 54.5 MPG

The Soul is just one of a number of ?box-mobiles? that have been launched onto the U.S. market in recent years, but it has remained a strong seller despite the lackluster success of many competitive offerings and the steady decline of the once-hot Scion xB.

Kia overall has shown some of the biggest momentum of any brand in the U.S. market.? The hamsters have clearly helped, according to marketing analysts, though the Korean firm has been aggressively getting its message out in a variety of ways, including a costly NBA sponsorship.
