The Oneida American Legion baseball team hosted Rock Island Tuesday evening and for the first half of the game held their own.
Post 727 led Post 200 5-4 through five innings on a hot and humid evening.
Then things got away from Coach John Clark's club with Rock Island scoring 12 times over the final four frames to post a 16-7 decision.
"We gave them a good game for five innings, but then it got away from us," Clark said. "They're a great hitting ball club and we just couldn't stop the bleeding."
With the win, Rock Island improved to 22-6 while the loss leaves Post 727 at 17-8.
Post 200 struck early taking advantage of an error to make it 2-0 against Oneida right hander James Doubet.
Post 727 got one back in their half of the third inning when Nick Ragan drove in Derek Raterman cutting the deficit to one.
Oneida took a 5-2 lead with a four spot in the fourth on only one hit. That blow was a big one ? a three run homer off the bat of Trey Hannam. It came after Rock Island starter Michael Peters walked the first two hitters in the inning. After Tyler Doubet stole third base, Peters committed a balk for the first run. He then hit Raterman with a 1-2 count. Hannam followed with his blast to left center.
Post 200 responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make it 5-4 Oneida. ?
Post 727 added a tally in their half of the fifth on Daniel Smith's two out RBI single off of Rock Island reliever Jonah Sarangalo, who had taken over for Peters.
From that point on, Sarangalo yielded just two harmless singles to get the win with Mitch Erickson working a one-two-three ninth.
The Rock Island offense took over in the sixth scoring three times on one hit against James Doubet. The one hit was a home run by Taner Ledezma, which accounted for two of the three runs.
"We haven't played that many nine inning games this season, but our pitchers have to learn not to throw 100 pitches in the first five or six frames," Clark said. "That will get you into trouble every time."
Rock Island's offense went off on the Oneida bullpen scoring four times on four hits against Kyle Waggenbach and five times in the ninth against Sam Rammage. All that damage came after two outs and the bases empty. ?It started with a hit batsman and ended with Rock Island's Tyler Ulfig making the first and last out.
"We got some nine inning games the rest of this week," said Clark, "so our pitchers will have a pretty good idea of what to expect before the start of District next week in Farmington."
